Term alternatives and their Usage status define the priority and recommendation level for term translations in a Glossary (formerly "Term base"). When a term has multiple translation alternatives, assigning a Usage status tells human translators and LINA which translation to prefer, accept, or avoid.
Using Term alternatives and their Usage status ensures consistent terminology across target languages and directly influences AI translation suggestions and Quality checks (QC).
Default behavior & example scenario
When you add a translation directly to your Glossary table view, LingoHub automatically assigns it the Preferred status by default. All alternative terms (such as Admitted terms) are managed and displayed exclusively in the side panel.
Suppose you are translating the English term "Sign in" into German:
"Anmelden" (Primary table entry): Added to the main Glossary table, so it automatically holds the Preferred status. LINA will automatically pick "Anmelden" when translating, and Quality checks will expect this term.
"Einloggen" (Alternative entry): Added as a term alternative with the status Admitted. It is displayed in the side panel for reference. LINA will treat this as an acceptable alternative if "Preferred" is unavailable. Quality checks will not trigger a warning if a human translator uses "Einloggen".
Available Usage status
LingoHub provides three usage status levels for Glossary entries:
Preferred: Marks the most recommended translation among synonyms. The primary table entry receives this status by default. LINA will always prioritize this translation.
Admitted: Marks an acceptable alternative translation. Admitted terms are displayed in the side panel for reference. LINA uses this option if no "Preferred" translation is available.
Not recommended: Marks translations that should be avoided. Editors display a warning if this term is used, and LINA will not suggest it.
💬 Please note: To receive editor warnings when unapproved or non-recommended terms are used, ensure Terms missing and Terms not recommended are enabled under Terminology in your LINA QA settings.
