Usage attribute is a characteristic that can be selected for the term base (glossary) entries. It indicates the preferred usage of a term translation within Lingohub, affecting the machine translation results. Thus, if you have a term with a few translations, you can add all of them and select the priority for each.

For instance, if you need to translate "Settings" from English to Spanish, you have two main options: "Configuración" and "Ajustes." Both translations are technically correct, but you can determine which should be prioritized by doing the following.

  • "Configuración" - attribute "preferred."

  • "Ajustes" - attribute "admitted," which means translation can be used as an alternative if necessary.

In this case, the quality checks would not raise a warning when the translator uses any of the options above, while machine translation would suggest "Configuración" in the results.

Lingohub usage attributes

Lingohub provides 5 usage attributes:

  • Preferred → the attribute to mark the most recommended translations for use among a set of synonyms.

    • Machine translation - this translation is always used for machine translation suggestions.

  • Admitted → the attribute to mark the translations acceptable for use if necessary but aren't the preferable option.

    • Machine translation - this translation will be used for machine translation suggestions in case there are no translations with the attribute “preferred.”

  • Undefined → the usage attribute, which is selected by default (if the user didn’t add the priority.).

    • Machine translation - this translation will be used for machine translation suggestions in case there are no translations with attribute “preferred.

  • NotRecommended → the attribute for translations that should not be used.

    • The suggestion shows that this translation should not be used.

  • Obsolete → the attribute for translations that are no longer used, for instance, if a more modern term has replaced it.

    • Machine translation never uses this translation for suggestions.

Note: You must select the appropriate settings to get the warnings from quality checks about terms usage.
