Understanding LINA roles and behavior

LINA can act in different capacities depending on how much automation you want in your localization workflow. You can assign LINA specific roles per target language to assist human translators, automatically translate segments for review, or fully automate approval.

How to view and change LINA's role

1. View assigned roles per language

  1. Click Projects in the top navigation bar and select your project from the list.

  2. Navigate to the Languages view.

  3. Look at the LINA role column located between the translation progress bar and segment status metrics.

  4. Each language displays a specific icon representing LINA's assigned role.

    • Speech bubble icon: Assistant (Default)

    • Pencil icon: Translator

    • Lightning icon: Agent

2. Change LINA's role and assign team members

  1. Go to Projects, select your project, go to Languages tab.

  2. Hover over the LINA icon next to the desired target language.

  3. Click Update LINA assignment.

  4. In the setup window, select your preferred LINA role (Assistant, Translator, or Agent).

  5. (Optional) You can also assign a team member alongside LINA for that language (e.g., to review LINA's translations when she acts as a Translator).

  6. Click Save to confirm your changes.

LINA roles & stage/status behavior

Individual segment statuses are grouped into four primary workflow stages. LINA processes segments depending on her assigned role, moving content across these stages:

  • Not ready: Includes statuses such as Blocked.

💬 Please note: Target segments in Not ready are ignored and will not be picked up or processed by LINA.

  • Needs editing: Includes statuses such as New, Stale, Rejected, and Draft.

  • Needs review: Includes statuses such as AI Translated, Translated, QA passed, and QA flagged.

  • Done: Includes statuses such as Approved and Not translatable (as defined in your Glossary).

⚠️ Important: Always verify your segment statuses and workflow stages before assigning LINA as a Translator or Agent (she will start translating automatically!). This ensures LINA only processes the intended segments and prevents her from translating too much or too little content across your projects. Learn more about statuses and stages.

LINA processing requirement

LINA will only pick up target segments for translation if the corresponding source text is in Done. If the source text is still in Not ready, Needs editing or Needs review, LINA will wait until the source segment is approved before translating.

1. Assistant role (Speech bubble icon)

  • Behavior: LINA acts as an interactive assistant in the Editor

  • Segment movement: LINA does not automatically process segments across project statuses. Human translators manually apply AI suggestions in the Pre-translate panel inside the Editor context panel.

2. Translator role (Pencil icon)

  • Behavior: LINA pre-translates and pre-checks text segments automatically. Human approval is required.

  • Segment movement: Moves all eligible segments from Needs editing directly to Needs review (e.g., status changes to AI Translated).

3. Agent role (Lightning icon)

  • Behavior: LINA translates, checks, and approves text segments automatically. Team members are only contacted when LINA encounters blocked issues.

  • Segment movement: Bypasses review and moves all eligible segments directly from Needs editing to Done (e.g., status changes to Approved).

💬 Please note: Depending on the volume of text segments LINA needs to translate, there may be a short queue delay. It might take some time before LINA picks up and processes newly added or updated segments. Once LINA has picked up and is processing the segments in the corresponding stage, a LINA icon will be displayed directly in the respective column.
